Commercial paper - How To Discuss

Commercial paper is usually issued at a discount from face value and reflects prevailing market interest rates.

  4. Promissory note (issued by financial institutions or large firms) with very-short to short maturity period (usually, 2 to 30 days, and not more than 270 days), and secured only by the reputation of the issuer. Commercial Paper

Asset-backed commercial paper is a form of bill of exchange that banks use in the money markets to borrow and lend money from each other. The newspaper is, at least theoretically, backed by assets.

Everything works well if all participants trust the value of these assets. However, many of the assets originated as derivative pools sold by the originator in connection with the collapse of the US subprime mortgage.

Few banks are willing to lend more against these bad assets and are reluctant to roll over and prefer to get their money back.

This commercial paper usually doesn't make it onto the balance sheets of banks, but if they can't roll it over with money from another bank, they have to put it on their balance sheet and maybe calculate the value of bad assets behind it. †

Most banks could not or would not disclose how much it would cost them to write off these assets and how much an "a" would represent on their balance sheets.

A way of borrowing money through short-term, unsecured loans that are sold directly to the public, usually through professionally managed investment firms.
