There are 3 free antivirus programs available to the general public:

1. Avira Antivir®

2. Avast!

3. Average

Antivirus has the highest detection rate, but it does not protect email messages and is known to generate fake alerts. In addition, after each system scan, the system will see a popup plugin asking if you want to upgrade to a paid version to protect the system. Including anti-spyware.

avast! It has a minimal user interface, but high detection and complete protection. Includes anti-spyware.

AVG has the highest percentage of all three, but its address is the weakest. A good interface requires more system resources and is the source of some programs (eg Half Life 2 Series).

As I answer, I am using AntiVir and am not affected. I really like AVG (never had a problem with this program) and will probably go back or use avast!

Some of the security programs I like are AVG for Anti-Virus, SpyBot Search and Destroy for Spyware and Adware Free Wall Protection. It's all 100% free and on a weak website. Make sure you run viruses and spyware programs every day, otherwise they won't help you.

Another important aspect is the Windows software update. In Vista (I have that), click S (Windows Flag), then click Control Panel and check for security updates.

What is the best antivirus you ask?

There are lots of good free and paid software out there. It's hard to say what's better. All you have to do is try different things and see what works best for you.

For the record, I'm currently using the Norton package that comes with the AT&T DSL Plus Spybot and Spyware Blaster. I used AVG and AdAware until I found out that Norton was free for me.

I prefer AVG. Provide free updates. Free versions are useful, but you will need separate programs for ANTIVIRUS, ANTISPYWARE and ROOTKITS. Unlike the paid version like AVG 8, it is a complete software package.
