What is Dura Rock?
Dura Board, Dura skirt. A concrete and fiberglass panel that is often used as a backing for ceramic tiles. Usually used on the bath deck. Sometimes also called the wonderbord.

Does Durock also need a vapor barrier?
I called USG, the manufacturer of the Durock Next Gen concrete panel, and they advised me not to use a vapor barrier to allow the wall cavity to breathe and allow moisture to evaporate. Their online instructions / diagrams do not show how to use the vapor barrier.

Screw the card away from the edges. Concrete boards have a smooth and a rough side. Turn the rough side if you’re using thin-layer grout to lay the tile, but turn the smooth side if you’re using latex putty.

- Remove dust and dirt from the joints between the Durock panels.
- Cut the fiberglass mesh tape so that it fits in a single layer on each seam where the panels meet, but does not overlap the tape.
- Mix the powdered latex reinforced cement mortar with water as directed on the package in a clean plastic bucket.
Which is the best Hardy or Durock board?
Durock is a reliable cementitious product that contains glass fiber. It is the heavier of the two materials, which means it is more difficult to use and maneuver. HardieBacker is much lighter and also the best-selling concrete board on the market. It is much cleaner because it does not contain glass.
Does it absorb water?
Because it is impregnated with a waxy base, it repels water but has about the same strength as normal paris plaster (cartoccio). The difference between concrete slabs and waterproof plasterboard is the strength of the shapes.

Do I need a vapor barrier behind a concrete panel in the shower?
With a concrete slab, a vapor barrier is still required, although in this case the barrier can go behind the slab. The concrete board is heavy and breathable enough to absorb moisture easily. The vapor barrier behind the concrete slab prevents moisture from penetrating further into the wall.
Can durock be used as an underlay?
Concrete panels, which are usually sold under trade names such as Durock, Hardiebacker, and WonderBoard, are now the standard backing for ceramic, porcelain or stone tiles that are laid with a thin-set mortar. Ceramic tiles on concrete plank are one of the strongest floor or wall surfaces you can install.
Can I use Hardiback in the shower?
This usually works well for a kitchen backsplash or fireplace, but as a backing panel for shower tiles, it’s a bad idea and contradicts the code. This also applies to moisture-resistant plaster, also called green leaf.
Put concrete planks under the tub?
You don’t need concrete boards under the tub. Much more important is a solid layer with layers under the bath.

A moisture barrier is required with any concrete panel product. If you don’t have plastic or roofing felt behind it, there is a liquid applied to it. Durock is truly waterproof, which means it won’t be damaged by water. But it is by no means a barrier to water.

2 answers. The thin set and the tape should reinforce the seams. If you want to tile over the concrete panel, you will need to glue the seams. If you just want to leave the corners untreated, you’ll probably be fine because the seam doesn’t divide the center of a tile.
