Added Value
What does added value or added value mean?
In online advertising, value added (or added value) refers to additional items that are added (for free) to a sale to improve the deal for the buyer. It's a surprisingly common term used to refer to all the extras a seller adds to close a deal, while maintaining the illusion of being locked into a lower price.
For example, you can add 10% more impressions to a bid so that the seller can claim to have sold 10% more CPMs than they actually did. It's a strange legal practice.
Often this is done as compensation for a previous deal that somehow disappointed the advertiser. It's also often used to convince an advertiser to take a shot at a publisher or ad network that they wouldn't otherwise consider.
More tips for website owners
While this can (of course) be a very effective way to get advertisers to buy ad space, it's a slippery . Depending on how you handle value-added printing, this can significantly increase the likelihood of underdelivery.
The trend is to generate additional impressions at a CPM of $0. This is true, but it means that most ad servers prefer paid ad campaigns over premium impressions. If you think stock giving away is meant to impress advertisers, there's no point.
So when you deliver value-added impressions, it's critical that they simply contribute to the primary objectives of the campaign. Then assign a reduced CPM to the entire campaign. This will help your registration as well as your delivery. Make sure you do.
Additional tips for ad buyers
Everyone loves free stuff, but beware of the price. Make sure you're only interested in buying if extra inventory reduces your effective CPM to the price you're interested in.
Similarly, verify that the CTR (or other KPI) of value-added inventory is significantly lower than that of paid inventory. If so, then this is not a good deal for you. In this case, it makes sense to request a relaunch of the value-added stock so that it works the same way as your paid stock.
